On Tuesday night a New York City community board listened to the hundreds of people imploring them to recognize a 150+ year old building in New York’s “financial district” that was once an unheralded clothing store, and some sort of pharmacy as a New York City landmark. Why? So the owners of the building don’t tear it down to build a community center which will also include a Mosque which just happens to be near the sacred burial ground that we call “9/11”. That’s right… pissed off angry New Yorkers are now slowly joining the ranks with the incredibly stupid in denying their own citizens, Muslim-worshipping Americans, their basic right to worship as clearly stated in the Constitution. The message these groups are sending is despicable, the precedent they are trying to set is dangerous, and completely stands against even the most basic protections of the U.S. Constitution. Why? Because of the same old 9/11 Bull Shit. Here are some things to think about…
-For starters, let’s stop pretending that ground zero is sacred ground. Our financial center is home to the most corrupt corporations who stole billions from American tax payer, while nearly ruining our economy. And not to mention the abundance of bars, strip clubs, gambling services, and publicized “escort” services, specifically aimed at pleasing the “corporate” gentleman, that continue to thrive in the district. So I don’t want to hear cries on how “insensitive” it is to have a mosque that no one will probably notice within blocks of the 9/11 attacks. Also stop pretending that there is a community over there. The financial district is just that, a financial district. It houses only a few people, and they are more concerned about their dry cleaning than they are about a Mosque.
- In the immediate area of the 9/11 attacks, there are dozens of churches, synagogues, and even Buddhist temples for people of all faiths. For god sakes it is New York F*cking City, the capital of the world! You can’t walk 20 feet without bumping into 5 different people all with different religious backgrounds. To simply single out Islam as a source of terror in this world would be grossly ignorant, and dangerous. The number of Muslim-Americans in this country more than tripled over the past few years, so like every other person who entered this country with a different back ground or faith, they are here to stay, so get used to it. I am not a Muslim and I take great exception to some of the teachings of Islam, but frankly I don’t see much of a difference between that Judaism, Christianity or any other denomination. Are Catholics forbidden to run youth programs because of their systematic support of the rape of young children?
-Since when did it become wrong to establish a peaceful place of worship in this country? It is one thing to harass Muslim-Americans at airports pretending that they are related to Osama Bin Laden, but is another to dictate to them when and where they can worship. And notice the key word here….”AMERICANS”. This is what I find odd about the “Tea Baggers” who are so quick to blindly quote the U.S. Constitution, completely forgetting that freedom of religion applies to all and not to just Christianity. The people entering the Mosque are not foreigners, but American citizens looking for a place to worship, as is their right. One of the organizers stated that “not to bash Muslims or tell them they can’t practice their faith”, but to express his belief that the location is an “inappropriate place”. Well guess what… the Mosque is not being built there for its sex appeal, but to address the growing number of Muslim Americans who already live or work there. Is it insensitive for them to live near the World Trade Center?
- And finally, if you are someone who thinks they have a “special” opinion on the matter because you lost a loved one on 9/11, then I say shame on you for exploiting the death of your husband, child or whoever that person was, to justify your prejudice! You are a disgrace to the memory of your loved ones, and a disgrace to peace loving persons all around the world. Your prolonged grief is no excuse to act out on defenseless citizens who have committed no crime against you, or your neighbor. The fact is that you and those who pretend to care about the victims of that day don’t really care about the Mosque, but simply want to perpetuate your self-centered desire to seek attention and fill your loss with a false sense of purpose and as opposed to moving on with your lives. Didn’t anyone learn anything from the finale of LOST?

Better said than I could muster, and hit all the points that I’ve been thinking about over the past days… The general intolerance and stupidity these days is off the flipping charts. What the deal, son? Grow up and spend some energy on shit that matters.
